IMPACT WIN BIG IN FIRST VICTORY OF THE SEASON

The Arizona Impact secure their first win of the season 10-2 against the previously undefeated Las Vegas Knights. The Impact played their first home game since their opener on Dec. 9.

Arizona played the Knights last week at the Sportspark in Las Vegas where the Knights edged them out in the last few minutes in an 8-9 thriller. Knights Boris Gujic, who had four goals, including the game winner against the Impact in their first matchup, did not travel with the team.

Despite there being only one goal in the first period, belonging to the Impact, Arizona never looked back and led for over 56 minutes in the game.  Arizona defender, Matt Marcum, led all scorers with 4 points on 2 goals and 2 assists. In his first game of the season, forward Phil Jackson bagged a hat trick for the home team.

Impact player of the match however, belonged to goalkeeper Eric Tate, who posted a .867 Save percentage with 13 saves and 1 goals allowed. He followed up an impressive game against the knights last week where his performance fell short of a win but came clutch this time around.

Even though they go back home with their first loss, Peter Sharkey and the Knights look forward to the rest of the season, looking to build off of this road trip.

“At this stage, I’m trying to bring through the young guys, most of the guys I had here today, this was their second ever pro game at this level playing against high quality opponents, but this will help them grow for the future and get the experience that they need” said Sharkey.

After many close losses for the Arizona Impact, their first victory of the season was a great feeling for both players and coaches that went through a few heartbreakers earlier in the season.

“It feels good. It’s starting to come together…. We’re going to keep sticking to what we’re doing. Trying to possess the ball and keep everybody out there and keep playing” said Impact Head Coach Mike Cudmore.

The Impact will be back next week on Jan. 13 in a non-conference game against the Colorado Blizzard, while the Knights face them the day after up in Vegas.
