Crunch home opener, RGV Barracudas season debut, highlight Week 6 action

If the first five weeks of the 2021-22 Major Arena Soccer Leauge action is any indication, fans in Cleveland, Brownsville, Wichita, Omaha and Ontario should get ready to cheer for lots of goals when M2 stages its six games Saturday and Sunday.

Through the first five weeks of play, teams in 17 games have combined to score an amazing 288 goals, or 16.94 goals per game combined. The lowest number of goals in a game has been 12, twice, while New Mexico and Amarillo combined for a memorable 32 goal effort several weeks back in an 18-14 win for the Bombers.

The Cleveland Crunch -- who won the 2020-21 M2 title -- will open the home portion of their season when the Muskegon Risers visit for a Saturday night kickoff. It's an early season battle between the two Eastern Division foes, with the Risers coming in at 2-2 and Cleveland 1-0. The two tangled just last weekend at Mercy Arena in Muskegon with the Crunch getting a four-goal performance by Captain Dave Jordan to secure an 8-5 win. The Risers offense is paced by Ryan Zietlow with his nine goals, just one off the M2 leader so far this season.

The RGV Barracudas is the last M2 team to make its season debut when they host the Amarillo Bombers for a doubleheadeer Saturdan and Sunday in Brownsville. The Bombers are off to a solid 2-1 start, and are led by Conrod Goulbourne with five goals and five assists and veteran M2 star Vitor Patriani who has nine goals and one assist. Saturday's kickoff will be at 7 p.m. CST while Sunday''s festivities will get underway at 4 p.m. CST.

The New Mexico Runners continue to inch closer to their first win of the season, but will be in tough against the Wings in Wichita (4-0) Saturday night at 7 p.m. CST. This one promises plenty of fireworkds as  Wichita's Bransyn Felty and New Mexico's Sergio Fuentes and Alejandro Garcia are all tied for the league lead in goals this year with 10.

The upstart Omaha Kings are off to a strong start, just a game back of Wichita in the midwest, with a 3-1 mark. and will host the Colorado Inferno Saturday at 9 p.m. CST.  Part of that record is the responsibility of Murilo Ceruli who leads the league, and Kings, in assists with eight and total points with 13. Armando Gonzalez paces the Inferno's offense with five points in two losses to open the 2021-22 season.

On Sunday, the Fury and Sockers will once again hook up, this time with the Fury serving as hosts. The Sockers have won two previous meetings of the Western Division foes by scores of 11-6 and 8-4. Ismael Rojo has been the Sockers leader on offense so far with six goals and three assists.     Bryan Quintanilla has a pair of goals to lead the Fury so far.

One weekend game has been postponed due to Covid-19 concerns. The Turlock Express was set to host the Sockers Friday night, but that game will be rescheduled at a later date.
